This is a powerful strategy to use as the protoss. What makes it so powerful is getting out the early observer to spy on your opponent and see exactly what they are going for.
By having an observer in their base you will be able to watch their every move. It is very good because you will see if they are teching up, increasing early, or if they will attack right away.

Then adapt your strategy accordingly. To go for this build you are going to want to start out the accepted way with a pylon at 9 followed by the gateway at 13 supply. Then get the second refinery at colse to 19/26 supply.
Get your robotics installation shortly after the gas and then you can get the second gateway. Study warpgate technology at the cybernetics core and then make your two gateways into warpgates. Build the third gateway and do the same.
As you see what your opponent is doing make sure you counter it. If you are facing a terran player that is going for marines and marauders then teching to colossi can be a great idea. You just need to stall them until you get the robotics bay.
If your opponent is zerg with an early expansion and transition into roaches then immortals with stalkers and sentries should do very well. Just be sure you got the force field micro down with sentries.
Another good thing about having the early robotics installation is that you will be able to get a warp prism to send in units to attack them when they least expect it.
This is a great harassment trick to use especially on maps that have a back door to their base. Teching level to colossi is very good against a roach/hydra build or a marine and marauder build with no starport in sight.
The last thing you want to see is air units when going for mostly air units like banshees or mutalisks. In this case you should obviously be massing up stalkers and even sentries since they so well against mutalisks. Have defense at your mineral line is ideal if this is what your opponent is doing.
You should be finding what your opponent is doing and act accordingly. If you are facing a terran player that is playing defense with bunkers then you should be increasing and protecting against any inherent threat.
